What significant changes did the wireless industry witness in 2013? What did these changes mean to vendors and customers?

The most significant change for 2013 had to be the insurgence of location based services readily available on the market.  For equipment vendors, this provides new areas of opportunity and increases their relevancy to a variety of business units within their customers. For customers this is very exciting as it opens a door to new revenue opportunities, customer engagement and automating workflows—all of which contribute to a better return on investment.

What are some of the changes you had anticipated would happen in 2013 but did not happen?

I was most disappointed with the mobile app space as it pertains to these location opportunities. This is a relatively green field that is ripe with opportunity, and I thought there would be more solutions out there that really get it.

Can you paint us an image of how the landscape for wireless technology will change in 2014? What are some of the broader trends you are closely watching?

The wireless industry has recently released 802.11ac, a new wireless standard touting high performances and better battery life for mobile devices, however it is being rolled out in two phases which makes it confusing and complicated for many businesses.  Instead of investing in this new hardware, we are seeing a trend to maximize the potential of current environments and focus on the business applications that are critical to the organization.  Most of the vendors are providing increased visibility and intelligence in this space and the timing seems to be right to focus here.

How will vendors and customers spending change in 2014 for the wireless technology industry? What makes you think customers will be buying more/less?

I expect to see an increase in spending on services and optimization as the focus seems to be on getting the most out of the wireless infrastructure.  Vendors have already shown that they are focusing here and developing use cases and business drivers that while they may be a small part of the overall solution, those key features or functions are the reason for discussion of new equipment.

What's in store for your company in 2014?

We will be focusing on enabling business drivers with wireless technologies for our customers.  There will be a strong focus on application and end-user experience as envisioning the outcome of the work is critical to the overall success of any of these initiatives.
